True Cost of NEW Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4k / BMPCC4k
True Cost of NEW Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4k / BMPCC4k. As we all impatiently waiting for the new pocket cinema camera to come out, for many people it’s going to be their first real camera purchase. Despite the very appealing price of the new bmpcc4k, let’s talk what it really going to cost you to owe one. I am not going to be covering extreme cinema setup ups, just an average amount of gadgets in order to mane camera fully functional and be ready to film in normal situations what most users are going to encounter.
CAMERA – First of all camera itself, we are looking at $1300 US dollars. Incredibly, the deal going to include Davinci Resolve the latest version, which on its own goes for $299. So technically, you get the camera for only $1000 US
STORAGE – This one is a two-part operation, one part is acquisition storage, aka memory card on set, and another one actual storage for your projects.
In-camera memory, as of right now, selection of CFAST 2.0 cards is not very broad, however, if you going to be running your camera with CFAST card, it’s going to cost you a bit of money. For example, this SONY CFAST 2.0 will run you $290 for only 128gb, which is not much at all shooting 4k RAW. Another cheaper option mentioned on Blackmagic Design Website is Samsung T5 SSD at half the price of Sony Card $149, you getting nearly 3 times more space 500gb. The downside of that, you are going to be attached with the cable, I am sure though, as soon as camera going to be out, manufacturers will find a nice way or cage to deal with the cable.
Computer Storage, the selection is pretty broad for this one, however, if you going to be looking for performance, you going to need to have a fast drive. Either SSD or RAID setup, but for now let’s just cover price of a single 5-6tb HDD from Amazon. Average price for external Hard Drive WD is $130 and it will give you 6 terabytes of room to play. Not the fastest solution but will get you in most cases.
LENS or LENSES – This one is up to you which lens you want to use, either native MFT mount, or existing Canon or Nikon glass with some kind of adapter. On Average, a decent lens will run you $1000 US and if you want sharp prime lenses, you are looking at about $1000-$3000 each lens. So that can cost some money, depending on where you want to be.
BATTERY – BMPCC4k uses standard widely available Canon LPe6 battery. It’s a great news considering how cheap and accessible those batteries are. I, however, strongly recommend using genuine canon brand, as in my many years of experience suggesting that knockoff batteries don’t hold the steady output, and may actually damage your camera. Legit Canon LPe6 cost only $68. If you want to go more professional route and get a legit professional battery, I highly recommend Swintronix Battery One of those babies will run your camera all day long and you never have to worry about power. Price is fair too, only $290 US
ND or NEUTRAL DENSITY FILTER – The sunglasses for the camera. ND allows you shoot open during the day without clipping highlights. Lots of choices on the market, from my personal experience, avoid those adjustable ND filters. Once you go above couple stops of exposure, they will produce ugly dark orbs on top and bottom of your image. Better stay away from variable filters. Buy a single “stop” filter better, lots to choose from. The average price is $200 They go from half the stops to something about 8 or so. Pick one and you should be golden.
So True Cost of NEW Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4k / BMPCC4k is approximately $3000 to start shooting.
Items listed above is the barebone setup to start shooting. There is obviously way more things come to play, but this setup should get you going. Hopefully, it was helpful to you.
