There is a lot of confusion online about new Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4k Dynamic Range Chart. From the first glance, it looks very confusing, but it’s actually very simple to follow. Here is the original chart that was posted today during the live presentation.

Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4k Dynamic Range Chart

From the first glance is little difficult to understand what is going on. Here is my visual explanation how you read the thing.

Dynamic-Range-Chart

First of all! Let’s pick a random ISO value, in my case, I went with ISO 200. Find a yellow point and draw a straight line down. It follows to roughly number 1. The end of the strip drops around 5. From 5 go all the way back to another end of the line, it drops to around 8. We combine 5 + 8, which is just an offset values, and we get 13, which is what Blackmagic Design claims to offer for pocket camera 4k. Repeat the same steps for other ISO values to get dynamic range from the chart.
